GalNAc conjugate (N acetylgalactosamine)

A sugar tag that directs an oligo to liver cells after a simple injection.

GalNAc, short for N acetylgalactosamine, is a sugar that binds a receptor found almost exclusively on liver cells. Attaching GalNAc to an oligonucleotide lets the liver take it up efficiently after a simple subcutaneous injection.

GalNAc conjugation is the delivery breakthrough behind most approved siRNA drugs, and extending targeted delivery beyond the liver is an active frontier.
